The Strangest Transfer Window in CS

We all love esports in CS for its transparent structure: each year is divided into two seasons, with teams updating their rosters and preparing for new tournaments in between

This gives us a convenient way to track reshuffles and assess who made brilliant deals and who made mistakes and will suffer for half a year. However, this summer's transfer window in CS has been one of the strangest, and the question of who actually improved is still hard to answer.

In the past, it was easy to identify standout and clear transfers. For example, in the winter, Ropz's transfer to Vitality made the team the best in the world, while Mouz took a risk by removing Siuhy and signing Brollan. NiKo finally joined Falcons, and Jame left Virtus.pro. All these transfers had clear goals and delivered predictable results. But this summer, everything turned out to be much more complicated.

Vitality and Mouz, being the top-1 and top-2 teams of last year, didn't make any changes, and TheMongolz and Aurora didn't look for reinforcements for obvious reasons. The only teams that updated their rosters were Spirit and NAVI, but their changes are hardly an improvement.

The example with B1ad3, who talks about the newcomer Makazze, clearly illustrates the current situation. He admits that a player with no tier-1 experience cannot immediately compete with other team members, and his transfer is more for the future. In another case, Hally expresses similar thoughts about Zweih: his progress so far is unimpressive, and the player needs time to adapt.

And these aren't isolated examples. In both teams, the newcomers were signed with a long-term perspective, not for immediate roster strengthening. B1ad3 even states outright that the team wanted to find a more experienced player, but there were no suitable options.

It's noteworthy that even in teams like Spirit, a transfer for Kyousuke was planned, but everything changed after an unexpected offer from Falcons. In the end, the replacement didn't result in any noticeable improvements, and it's hard to draw a direct connection between the changes and the team's success. Makazze and Zweih probably didn't play better than their predecessors, Jl and Magixx.

In lower-tier teams, the reshuffles were even stranger. For example, Heroic tried the Belarusian sniper Gr1ks, but after several tournament failures, they removed him from the roster. The result was a quick kick with an unclear explanation about mismatched playstyles. It's also worth noting Virtus.pro, who unexpectedly extended Perfecto's contract and removed Fl4mus, who had been signed for 4 years. However, the new roster didn't show improvements and was eliminated from the first tournament.

Equally mysterious was the transfer move from FaZe, who opted for Broky over S1mple. Of course, he started playing better than before the kick, but the team still didn't make it to the playoffs at IEM Cologne, raising questions about the logic of this change.

The situation at Falcons is equally intriguing. Yes, Kyousuke became the second player in Cologne, but this didn’t save the team from problems. NiKo, with a rating of 0.94 and an early exit from the group stage, is a clear signal that the decision to transfer him wasn't ideal. The team still faces coaching issues, and NiKo himself hasn't yet adapted to new roles.

However, there are positive examples. Mouz, despite losing in the final, finally defeated Vitality, which was an important step forward. The French club’s roster, despite the interrupted streak, still looks strong.

So, despite many transfers and changes this summer, it’s difficult to single out teams that truly improved. Many simply didn’t change their rosters or replaced a player with someone of equal level, and in the worst case, took risks that might lead to a step back. Heroic, for example, now have to integrate a new sniper into the team during tournaments, adding extra complexity to their game.

Thus, the summer 2025 transfer window in CS leaves more questions than answers.
