Gabe Newell's Daily Routine
Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell has opened up about his unique daily schedule — a blend of work, scuba diving, and time spent aboard a luxury yacht. Speaking candidly about his lifestyle, Newell explained why he doesn’t consider his packed routine to be “work” in the traditional sense.
“My daily routine? I wake up, I work, I go scuba diving, then I work again. Then maybe I dive again, or hit the gym. I live on a yacht, so I spend time with the others on board. And then I work again. I work seven days a week. As you can see, I do it right from my bedroom,” said Newell.
Despite what sounds like an intense and demanding schedule, the 62-year-old developer sees it all as a source of joy rather than stress. According to Newell, the key lies in doing what you love every day.
“I love working — it’s fun. To me, it doesn’t feel like work. The things I get to do every day are just incredible. When you retire, you want to stop doing awful work and start doing what you love — something fun,” he added.
For Newell, retirement doesn’t mean slowing down. Instead, it means eliminating the mundane in favor of passion-driven projects. Even with having been in the video game industry for decades, even after he has nothing more to prove, Gabe is still very much involved in day-to-day operations at Valve.
What makes his existence all the more intriguing is the backdrop under which he works.Rather than an office or home study, Newell works directly from his bedroom — aboard a yacht. His days are filled with deep-sea diving, fitness, collaborative time with fellow passengers, and frequent returns to his professional responsibilities.
Newell's credo of believing in loving what you do blurs the lines between work and play, according to fans' and contemporaries' perceptions. And with his new existence, he presents an unobscured vision of what fulfillment can be when passion animates purpose.
Gabe Newell's story isn't just one of video game success — it's about making work-life balance his own.
